Tort reform proposal will deprive citizens of vital rights

Wake up, Northeastern Pennsylvanians! Your senators are about to flush your rights down the tubes.

The Senate Judiciary Committee is considering a bill that would open the state Constitution to damage limits in ALL types of personal injury cases. If the committee approves the bill, it will be considered for a vote by the full Senate.

That means that if a landfill pollutes your groundwater and your child dies of cancer, the amount of money you can win in a lawsuit will be arbitrarily limited by law. It means that if your SUV explodes and kills your family, you might only get $250,000.

With all the toxic waste dumps we have in our area, do we really want to give corporate polluters a pass? Do we want to allow manufacturers to put products on the market knowing they are dangerous to the public?

Caps won't help lower doctors' insurance premiums, as proven by the experience of other states. They will, however, dramatically lower the lawsuit exposure of rich corporations, which is really what tort reform is all about.

Tort reform is about helping out the corporate special interests who line the pockets of our politicians with campaign contributions.

Please, before it's too late, call your state senator and tell them to say no to tort reform.
